Buying your First Bow

Archery is exciting and with it, comes the desire of getting your own equipment as soon as possible. We highly recommend that you get your equipment under the guidance of a senior coach.

This wonderful sport, is a deep rabbit hole, and could become daunting to choose your first bow. What’s your draw length? Are you allowed to use a plunger? Can you use a dampener, and if so, what type should you go for?

Again, you’re never wrong reading this again, we highly recommend that you get your equipment under the guidance of a senior coach.

Not all bows are made equal. In the very fact, two bows, of the same model, will perform inevitably differently.

In addition to this, there are so many things a novice archer won’t know and won’t consider, that non-aided or alone purchases are often not advisable.

The first thing to bear in mind, is that fresh of a beginners course, you are expected to use the club’s equipment for the first months. This will help you develop better, increase your knowledge on the equipment you may find and see what other experienced archers chose to shoot with. Ultimately, the club expects you to purchase your own equipment.

A sensible approach to get your first bow could be:

– 1. talk with a senior coach to get some preliminary ideas (and discover your draw length, and bow weight)
– 2. talk to senior members of the club, and ask them how they chose the equipment they are currently using
– 3. (optional) make your mind up
– 4. go to a senior coach and review your ideas and either proceed with the purchase or let them guide you in the choice

Never fear to ask for advice,
we’re all here to enjoy the sport.
